Doonhamer PS.
Here’s an e.mail received today, September 28th, from Chas Stansfield, competitor No. 10 in the wee TR3 that went on fire at the Oakbank test on the Doonhamer.
“Dear Roland
Sorry it’s taken nearly a week to drop you a note, but I’m sure you’ll appreciate we’ve been rather preoccupied with sorting the car out.
First, thank you and the whole team for a fantastic event. Up to our ‘distaster’ we were having a brilliant day and the old TR was loving the tests. The navigation was excellent and the tests themselves a great mix which seemed to provide just the right amount of challenge for a great range of cars and driver skills.
Everybody was so friendly and we’ve never seen so many ‘ear to ear’ grins among the competitors.
However, the biggest thankyou is for all the kindness and help shown when our rally came to a fiery end. The marshalls on the test were briliant and their prompt action kept the damage to a minimum. Please pass on our thanks to them and to the marshall running the test (unforgivably, I didn’t ask his name) who not only ran us back to rally HQ but also dropped us off at our digs in Dumfries afterwards. Thanks to those marshalls, the damage was contained and we’re already well on the way to getting the car back on the road – we’re booked in for the Solway Rally in a couple of weeks, so that’s our target.
If you’ll have us back, we’ll definitely be there next year.
Once again thank you and best wishes to all the team.
Chas Stansfield and Martin Harwood”.
By the way, the marshal running the test in question was none other than Club Chairman, Tony Currie. Take a bow Tony!. And also, take a bow Andrew and Neil Macgregor, who were fortunately marshalling right on the spot where the fire took hold and, due to their quick thinking, avoided a drama becoming a crisis.
